How to Purchase an Ebook

Buying an ebook from Porter Square Books is not much different from buying a regular book online. Depending on your ereading device there are two different ways to purchase ebooks from us. Below are step by step guides to both.

iPad, Nook, Sony Reader, etc.
If you’re using an ipad, Nook product, Sony Reader, iRiver Story HD and any other dedicated ereader, or just your computer, buy our ebooks through your web browser.

1. Go to portersquarebooks.com and login to or create your free Porter Square Books account. If you already have a google account, you should sign in with that. Because we use google ebooks, using your google account will make things smoother.

2.  Go to the Search Google eBooks Field on our home page and enter a title, author, or keyword for the book you want.

(2a. Not sure you want the ebook. Use the regular search field. Find the book and click on the "Other Editions of this Title" link. This will bring you to a list of all the available editions of the book, including ebooks. This list isn't always perfect, but it will give a good sense of your options.)

4.  Find the eBook and click “Add to Cart.”

5. If you’re ready to purchase click “Checkout” or click “Continue Shopping” to, um, well, continue shopping.

6. Fill in the billing information, including an email address, just like purchasing a regular book. You can choose to save your credit card information to make this easier next time you buy.

7. Click "Review Order."  If everything is correct, click "Complete Order"

8. You will then be taken to an "Order Complete" page with a link to a "My Account" page, which has a “My eBooks” tab. Your newly purchased ebook will be there.

Android Tablet
The IndieBound Reader App for Android lets you make in app purchases from Porter Square Books. Along with being a great overall ebook reader, this is the most convenient way to buy your ebooks.

1. Install IndieBound Reader from the Android App Market

2. Launch the app and login with your google account. If you don’t have a google account it would be easiest to create one with a browser before launching the app.

3. Choose “Get Books.”

4. The first time you do this you’ll be asked to choose the bookstore you’d like to shop with. You can search either by name “Porter Square Books,” or by zip code, “02140.” Once you’ve chosen Porter Square Books (you can change this later if you want) you’ll be taken to our ebook storefront.

5. Search for your ebook or browse the ebook catalog.

6.  Add to cart and checkout as above. I would advise saving your credit card information since it can sometimes be a pain to type all those numbers on tablets and smartphones.

7. Choose “Download” and the ebook will be in your library ready to go.

Reading and sharing ebooks

I have an Android tablet that (for reasons that are not entirely clear) is blocked from accessing Google Play.
I have a vague suspicion that there are all kinds of restrictions that are not completely transparent. I could just try it, but it would be nice to know beforehand, so I have these three questions:
- Can I download a Google E-book to my PC and will it be readable on my Android when I transfer it?
- Will it be readable in other E-reader apps, say FBreader?
- Can I pass it on to my wife to read it on her Nook, like I would do with a paperback?

Thank you!

What kind of tablet is it?

What kind of tablet is it? I've heard of a few of them that don't connect to the Android Marketplace, which is now Google Play. If you have one of those, they can sometimes be "rooted" to open them up, but that varies from model to model. There is also an IndieBound Reader App that can read our ebooks. Here is a link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.aba.ibreader You can also read them in a web browser.

Nearly all of our ebooks are available in .EPUB format, which means they can be read by just about every device including the Nook. I don't know for sure about the FBReader, but since it looks like they support .EPUB, it should work.  Here are  general instructions on reading our including how to use the Nook: http://www.portersquarebooks.com/how-read-ebook

If you're able to download it to your tablet, you should be able to also download it to your computer and transfer it to the Nook, as ebooks purchases allow for up to 4 separate downloads.

Hope this helps.

E-books

I'd love to support you by buying e-books from you, but I own a Kindle.

Is there any chance Amazon will let you sell Kindle books?

At the moment, no, at least

At the moment, no, at least not for the older Kindles. You can purchase our ebooks on the Kindle Fire though. It involves side-loading the IndieBound Reader app. If you go to our Tablets page, there are instructions on how to do that.  Thanks.

You can totally load Google

You can totally load Google ebooks on older Kindles - you just need to use a third-party application to do it.

I downloaded Calibre (which is free) and I use it to convert ebooks to .mobi (if they aren't already) and move them to my Kindle.

There is some truth to that,

There is some truth to that, but it is important to remember that most ebooks you purchase come with DRM that prevent their conversion from format to format.  Just something to be aware of.
